Tax return deadlines
If you are self-employed and earn more than £1,000 during the tax year (6 April to 5 April), or if you have entered into a business partnership, you need to do a tax return. The deadline to file your tax return is 31 January. As a result of Covid-19, HRMC is waiving late filing penalties provided you file your tax return by 28 February. If you miss this deadline, HMRC will issue you with a fine.
Late tax return fines
The amount HRMC will fine you depends on how late your tax return is. The fines are as follows:
- One day late - excluding the Covid-19 waiver, if you file your self-assessment tax return one day late, you will be charged £100. Even if you don’t owe any tax, you will still be liable to pay this penalty. If you miss the 28 February Covid-19 deadline, you will have to pay this £100 fine.
- Three months late – you will be fined £10 a day (up to £900 total) if you submit your tax return three months late.
- Six months late – tax returns that are six months late will incur a £300 fine, or 5% of your due tax bill depending on which value is the highest.
- Twelve months late – you will need to pay an additional £300 or 5% of your due tax bill (whichever is higher) if you file your tax return 12 months after the due date. In some cases, HMRC may charge you up to 100% of your owed tax.
What to do if you miss the deadline
If you miss the HMRC tax return deadline, you have a few options. The first option is to contact HMRC and inform them of why you have filed your tax return late. There are a number of viable excuses which HMRC accept to justify a late tax return. They include:
- Grief/bereavement
- Unexpected illness
- Technical/computer issues
- HMRC online service issues
- Flood/fire damage
- Theft
